diccionario histórico definitivo de la lengua inglesa.
Concebido en 1857 por la Sociedad Filológica de Londres, el largo y sostenido proceso editorial que llevó a su concreción se inició, en 1879, bajo la dirección de James Murray. Publicado en 10 volúmenes entre 1884 y 1928, apareció por primera vez bajo su denominación actual en 1933. Sus definiciones, por lo general, se estructuran por orden de ocurrencia histórica y se ilustran con citas datadas de la literatura y otros registros de la lengua inglesa. La segunda edición se publicó en 20 volúmenes en 1989.
